# E-Lock 20: Emergency Unlock Used

> Learn what triggers the E-Lock-20 error code and how to restore your Chastity Lockbox to normal operation after an emergency unlock.

## What is E-Lock-20?

E-Lock-20 is an error code that appears when a Lockee uses the emergency unlock feature during an active lock session. This error indicates the device has entered a temporary penalty state and cannot be locked again for 24 hours—or until a Keyholder intervenes.

## Why does this happen?

The emergency unlock feature exists for situations where immediate release is necessary but normal unlock procedures aren't possible. While this feature ensures your safety, it includes a built-in consequence to discourage unnecessary use.

<Info>
  The 24-hour lockout period helps maintain the integrity of the locking experience while still ensuring emergency access is always available.
</Info>

## What happens when E-Lock-20 is triggered?

When you see the E-Lock-20 error, your Lockbox becomes temporarily unusable for new lock sessions. This is an intentional design feature—not a malfunction.

## How to resolve E-Lock-20

Your Lockbox isn't permanently disabled. You have three options to restore normal functionality:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Dashboard resolution (recommended for paired devices)">
    1. Visit [dashboard.researchanddesire.com](https://dashboard.researchanddesire.com/)
    2. Log into your account
    3. Submit a reason for your emergency unlock

    <Check>
      If your device is connected to WiFi and paired, it will restore to normal use within 5 minutes.
    </Check>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Automatic timeout">
    Keep your Lockbox plugged in and powered on for 24 hours. After this period, your device will automatically return to normal operation.

    <Note>
      No action required—just wait for the timeout period to complete.
    </Note>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Keyholder intervention">
    Your Keyholder can clear the emergency unlock state immediately by sending either a **Lock** or **Unlock** command from the dashboard.

    <Tip>
      This is the fastest resolution method if your Keyholder is available.
    </Tip>
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Preventing future occurrences

To avoid triggering E-Lock-20:

* Always communicate with your Keyholder for unlocks when possible
* Reserve the emergency unlock feature for true emergencies only
* Familiarize yourself with our [Emergency Unlock Guide](../device-states/emergency-unlock) so you understand when and how to use this feature appropriately

<Warning>
  Emergency unlocks are logged and visible to your Keyholder. Using this feature unnecessarily may affect your dynamic with them.
</Warning>
