# Understanding access types
> Choose the right direction of control when inviting a partner: give access to your devices or request access to theirs.
# Understanding access types
When you invite another user to connect, you’ll choose an access type. This sets who controls which devices in your relationship.
## Access types at a glance
* Give them access to my devices
* You share control of devices paired to your account.
* In Lockbox terms, you’re the lockee and your partner is the Keyholder.
* Your partner can manage settings and sessions on the devices you share. To fully hand over control of a Lockbox, enable Give Up Control in the dashboard.
* Request access to their devices
* You ask to control devices paired to your partner’s account.
* In Lockbox terms, you’ll be the Keyholder once they accept.
* Your partner retains ownership of their devices; you gain permission to manage them.
Terminology you may see in the dashboard and docs:
* Keyholder (controller) ↔ Lockee (controlled) for the Chastity Lockbox.
* “Top” and “bottom” are informal labels that map to controller and controlled, respectively.
## Create an invitation
Go to Settings → Partners in the dashboard.
If you enable Sharing events in your email preferences, you’ll receive an email when invitations are sent or accepted. See Email Preferences.
Click Create invitation, search for your partner, and select an access type:
* Give them access to my devices
* Request access to their devices
Send the invitation. Your partner will see it in their dashboard and can accept or decline.
After acceptance, confirm the connection appears under Settings → Partners with the expected role (you controlling them, or them controlling you).
If you own the device and want someone else to control it, choose Give them
access to my devices. If your partner owns the device and you plan to control
it, choose Request access to their devices.
## Handing off full control (Lockbox)
If you want your Keyholder to have exclusive control of your Lockbox from the dashboard, turn on Give Up Control. This disables your own lock/unlock controls until the setting is changed.

Give Up Control is powerful. Make sure you trust your Keyholder and have an
agreed emergency plan before enabling it.
## Common scenarios
* You’re a bottom with devices on your account
* Choose Give them access to my devices.
* Optional: Enable Give Up Control for exclusive Keyholder control.
* You’re a top and your partner’s devices are on their account
* Choose Request access to their devices.
* You’re a top but your devices are paired to your own account
* For the cleanest setup, re‑pair those devices to your bottom’s account, then send Request access to their devices so you control them from your account.
- Make sure they accepted the invitation.
- Verify the device is paired to your account (not theirs). If needed, re‑pair:

Cancel the pending invitation from Settings → Partners and send a new one with
the correct access type.
Device ownership follows pairing and purchase records. Review the device ownership policy and unpair/transfer if needed.
