Primary ownership
The primary owner of a device is the individual who completed the purchase.- If we can verify a purchase through a Shopify order or internal store records, and the purchaser’s email matches the one used to contact us, they are the device owner.
- The primary owner can request the device be unpaired from any account, regardless of which account currently holds it.
- No justification is required. Upon a verified request, support will immediately unpair the device.
Ownership without a purchase record
When no purchase record exists, we establish ownership based on device usage history:- The first account to log an event from the device (such as pairing, usage, or commands) becomes the initial owner.
- This account holder may request the device be unpaired from any account at any time, for any reason.
- Support staff will process unpairing requests immediately.
Transferring ownership
Ownership can transfer under the following circumstances:Voluntary unpairing by the owner
- When the current owner unpairs the device from their account, this constitutes an intentional release of ownership.
- The next user to pair the device becomes the new owner.
- Once a new user pairs the device after an unpairing event, ownership transfers to that new user.
When ownership history is unclear, Research and Desire assigns ownership to the original purchaser.
Transfer of ownership by Research and Desire
Sometimes a user requests a device transfer while the original purchaser remains the listed owner. If the device is still paired to the original purchaser’s account and they have not unpaired it, the following process applies:- Research and Desire contacts the purchaser at the email address associated with the original order.
- The purchaser has 30 days to respond to the transfer request.
- If the purchaser approves the transfer, we immediately transfer ownership to the requesting user.
- If the purchaser declines the transfer, we do not transfer the device.
- If the purchaser does not respond within 30 days, we consider them non-responsive and transfer the device to the requesting user.
This process respects the rights of original purchasers while providing a clear path forward for active users in unresolved disputes.
