Understanding access types
When you create an invitation to connect with another user, you’ll choose one of two access types. This determines the direction of control in your shared device relationship. The two access types
When creating a new invitation, you have two options:| Access type | You are the… | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Give them access to my devices | Bottom | You have devices on your account and want someone else to control them |
| Request access to their devices | Top | They have devices on their account and you want to manage their settings |
Choosing the right option
- Choose “Give them access to my devices” if you have devices registered to your account and want a partner to control them.
- Choose “Request access to their devices” if your partner has devices and you want to manage their settings.
If you’re a top who currently has devices registered to your own account, consider re-pairing those devices to your bottom’s account for a cleaner setup.

0:00 Hey, let’s discuss access type. When I’m creating the new invitation to share devices with my partners, by clicking this button, create invitation, I will, of course, be able to search for a partner as we’ve seen before.0:12 And below I’ll be able to choose one of two options for access type. First is, give them access to my devices, and the second is, request access to their devices.0:22 What do these mean? The first option means that I will be the bottom. This means that I have devices on my account, and I want somebody else to control them.0:32 The second option means that I will be the top. They have a device on their account that they’ll be using, and I will be managing settings for it.0:42 So, if you have devices, on your account, and you would like to be the bottom in a relationship, then you would choose give them access to my devices.0:52 If you are a top, and you would like to control somebody who has devices, you would like to request access to their devices.1:00 Note, there’s a little bit of confusion today in this dashboard setup. We’re going to be rewriting this, but if you are a top who has devices on their account, you may want to repair that device onto your bottom’s account.1:14 All right, that’s it for now. Thank you.
