What is Emergency Unlock Mode?
Emergency Unlock Mode is a safety feature that allows you to unlock your device in case of an urgent situation. This feature should only be used in genuine emergencies, where the Lockee must access the keys and the Keyholder cannot unlock the device.
How to Access Emergency Unlock Mode
- When your device is locked or a lock timer is running, press and hold the enter button.
- A menu will appear on the display.
- Navigate to the "Emergency Unlock" option.
- Select this option to proceed.

After selecting "Emergency Unlock" and you’ll be asked one more time to confirm your choice. You should also see a QR code to this help article.
Consequences of Using Emergency Unlock
Using the Emergency Unlock feature has several important consequences:
- Your current session will end immediately.
- (Feature coming soon) Your partners will be notified about this action right away.
- (Feature coming soon) Your device will be temporarily disabled from being locked again. To re-enable locking:
- You must log into your dashboard
- You must enter a reason for the emergency unlock
- This reason will be shared with your Keyholder and publicly if you’ve enabled ‘Public Shame’ on your account.
- (Feature coming soon) Alternatively, your device will automatically exit Emergency Mode after 24 hours without entering a reason for the unlock.
Before Using Emergency Unlock
To avoid misuse, please consider the following before using Emergency Unlock:
- Try to message your Keyholder and request a break.
- Only use this feature in a genuine emergency.
- Remember that using this feature will require you to explain your reasons later.

The Emergency Unlock feature is designed for your safety in urgent situations. Using it without a valid reason may affect trust with your Keyholder and impact your experience. Always prioritize open communication with your Keyholder when possible.
Disable Emergency Mode
Do you find Emergency Mode too tempting? You can now disable Emergency Unlock Mode entirely from your dashboard, making it impossible to use the emergency unlock feature. Here's what you need to know:
- This feature can be enabled/disabled from your device settings in the dashboard
- Once disabled, Emergency Unlock cannot be used under any circumstances
- The only way to unlock the device will be through your Keyholder
- This setting can only be changed while the device is unlocked
- Warning: When Emergency Mode is disabled, the only way to access the device without a Keyholder is to physically break the backplate
To disable Emergency Unlock:
- Go to your dashboard
- Navigate to your Lock sesssion settings
- Find the "Emergency Unlock" section
- Toggle "Disable Emergency Unlock"
- Confirm your choice
Important: Think carefully before disabling this feature. While it adds an extra layer of security and commitment to your session, it also means you cannot access the device even in genuine emergencies without your Keyholder's permission.
